When it comes to skincare, I’m a newbie. I’d never been interested in developing a routine until 2019 when I developed a really bad reaction from I’m not sure what. My skin went from clear, problem-free “not even a pimple” to full-blown hormonal type acne in a weekend.
I’m almost sure that it was a result of a makeup product I used, as I filmed that day, and I woke up to a rash on my chin the following morning.
Nevertheless, you can imagine the stares and questions from strangers I received on my way to work, as well as the embarrassment. I didn’t realize how severe it had become until I looked at my face OUTSIDE in the glaring sun.
I tried everything and spent tons of money, but it kept getting worse until I went the natural route with an aloe-based product my mom had a subscription for from Germany.
However, that incident prompted me to really pay attention to my skin as I was getting older. For a full year, I went makeup-free, partly because I was afraid of a repeat, as I tried and tested clean products. I mostly remained in with the Aveeno range as it was cleaner and gentler for my newly developed troubled skin. Here’s a sneak of what my skin looked like now.
HOW I STARTED MY SKINCARE ROUTINE
In 2021, I started to research and follow skincare experts and bloggers like Dominique Baker & Dr. Alexis Stephens to learn more about HOW to develop a skincare routine as I navigated the second half of my 30s. I had post-breakout marks, a lot of texture, and hyperpigmentation, especially beneath my eyes.
I shared a bit in this post where I started to use Pixi Beauty’s skincare products, but never went back to using the brand after.
Even though I’m still learning, and discovering new products, I’ve developed a simple night and day regimen. For my nighttime routine, I cleanse my skin, use a simple toner, a bit of retinol, and moisturizer and I occasionally scrub my skin a few times a week. For my daytime skincare routine, I cleanse my skin, use a bit of vitamin c or niacinamide, moisturize, and use sunscreen before I put on makeup.
So far, my skin and I have been loving the results. I still have a few dark circles but my skin is so much brighter, smoother, and softer. My intention is to continue exploring skincare and refine my routine throughout this year, but here’s a video on my simple daytime skincare routine.
Lately, I’ve been using Caudalie, The Ordinary, and Aveeno Products.
